What To Bring To Los Angeles

Visiting Los Angeles for Spring Break? Or for a quick vacation? Before you visit, make sure you pack the essentials. Below is a list of must have items to make your Los Angeles vacation great!

  1. Sunglasses & Hat. Los Angeles is pretty sunny and squinting your eyes all day can get pretty tiring.
  2. This is a must, especially for those who get sun burn easily.
  3. Bathing Suit. Whether you’re going in the summer or the winter be sure to bring a swim suit just in case. There are several winter days with a high of 70 degrees, which is extremely warm if you’re arriving from somewhere that is only 25 degrees.
  4. While the temperature can be warm in one are, the temperature can drop just by driving an hour. That’s because California is made microclimates. So be sure to layer and bring a jacket.
  5. A Camera! Because you never know what or who you might see!

Self Storage Tips!

Moving and storage are two sides of the same coin. Chances are if you’re moving, you have to put some of your stuff in storage. And unless you’re paying the moving company extra to use their storage building, chances are you’re going to have to rent a self-storage unit.

Here are some tips that may help you tackle the self-storage process.

  1. Leverage the cubic volume (height) of your space by stacking boxes. Don’t stack higher than you can reach, place heavier boxes at the bottom of the stack and don’t overpack or underpack your boxes. Overpacked boxes lead to bulging and underpacked boxes can lead to crushing. Either condition will greatly affect your ability to stack your boxes safely.
  2. Store valuable items toward the back of the storage unit in unmarked containers. Thieves will typically not take the time to go through your entire storage unit to find you valuables. In fact, consider not putting your valuables in storage in the first place.
  3. Clean out any refrigerators or freezers and let them dry before putting them into storage. Additionally, leave the doors ajar for air flow and take advantage of the space inside to store additional items.

Packing Tips!

Pack one room at a time labeling each box appropriately (on top and side) with a description of its contents and which room the box belongs in. Also label boxes containing breakable or sentimental items with Fragile. Keep a detailed list of what items are packed in each box to make unpacking easier.
Empty all drawers of breakable or spillable items. To keep from unnecessary damage, it’s a good idea to put all furniture knobs, feet, screws, etc. in one container that you can keep with you so the parts won’t get lost.
Do not pack flammable goods or heat sensitive items like candles, records, audio and video tapes, computer disks, propane tanks, aerosol cans, oil based paints, and certain cleaning fluids.
Wrap items individually and always place a layer of crushed paper in the bottom of the carton for cushioning. Fill empty spaces with additional crushed paper.
Make sure cartons are firmly packed with heavier items on bottom and lighter ones on top.
If you’ll be putting some boxes in storage, make sure to pack according to the seasons during which your things will be in storage and mark the boxes accordingly.
Put heavy items in small boxes so that they’re easier to carry.
When packing the truck, make sure the items you’ll need first are loaded in last (i.e. kids toys, kitchen items, telephone and radio) to make access easier.

Things to know before traveling to Los Angeles!

Are you or anyone you know planning to travel to LA any time soon? Here are some tips you can follow to ensure you enjoy your trip to the fullest.

1)      Know the Weather: The weather averages a low of 50 degrees and a high of 70 degrees. Keep this in mind while packing. Chances of you needing a coat are almost nil in LA. Be even smarter and check the forecast for the right spot: temperatures vary within just a few miles.

2)      You Have Options for Airports: While Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) is the best-known and busiest airport in the area, it’s also prone to delays, busy and confusing. You can consider flying into Burbank (BUR), Orange County’s John Wayne Airport (SNA) or Long Beach (LGB) instead.

3)      Avoid the 405: This freeway seems to be perpetually gridlocked, especially between US 101 and Long Beach, and you can get in a traffic jam on it anytime, whether it’s rush hour, midnight on Tuesday or noon on Sunday. Get a good map and use it to plot another route.

It’s a Family Affair

Moving can be stressful for all the parties involved, but children often bare the biggest burden. With little voice in the moving process, they can often feel neglected or ignored.

Try to get your child involved in the moving process. Have them pack some of their own special belongings and younger children can decorate the box with stickers and/or markers. Be sure to keep this “box of necessities” close at hand during the move.

What are your kids concerned about?

  • Preschool children tend to worry about being left behind or separated from their parents.
  • Kids ages 6 to 12 can be concerned with how their daily routines will be affected.
  • Teenagers are concerned primarily with fitting in and having their social life disrupted.

Ideas for easing their concerns include: Communicate with your child about what the new house will be like. Take them on a visit of the new home and neighborhood, but if you can’t, take lots of pictures or videotape it to make them feel more comfortable with their future surroundings.
